Grocery Sales: $288 billion from 4,253 stores. (Walmart’s & Sam’s Club total revenues in 2019 were over $514 billion and grocery now accounts for 56% of their sales.
2. THE KROGER CO.
Revenues of about $121 billion across its 2,759 stores operating under the Kroger, Harris Teeter and Smith’s banners
3. ALBERTSONS COS. INC.
Revenues near $61 billion across its 2,323 stores operating under the Safeway, Albertsons, and Vons grocery banners.
4. AHOLD DELHAIZE USA
Revenues were more than $44 billion across 1,963 supermarkets operating under its Food Lion, Stop & Shop and Hannaford banners.
5. PUBLIX SUPER MARKETS INC.
$36 billion in revenues at 1,236 stores locations in Alabama (76), Florida (805), Georgia (187), North Carolina (45), South Carolina (62), Tennessee (46) and Virginia (15)
6. H.E. BUTT GROCERY CO.
Revenues of $22 billion from over 340 stores primarily in Texas
7. MEIJER INC.
Revenues near $17 billion from over 240 locations in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.
8. WAKEFERN FOOD CORP.
With revenues of $16.6 billion, Wakefern is a retailer owned cooperative that includes 354 supermarkets. These operate under the ShopRite, Price Rite, The Fresh Grocer, Dearborn Market and Gourmet Garage banners.
9.ALDI INC.
Aldi is a multinational food retailer that actually operates as two separate companies run by two different Albrecht brothers in 20 countries. In the US there are over 1,800 Aldi stores and the company plans to top 2,500 stores by 2022. The Albrecht is famously secretive but Aldi US revenues are estimated to be around $15 billion
10. WHOLE FOODS MARKET
Purchased by Amazon in 2017, Whole Foods stand alone revenues are estimated to be about $16 billion coming from 500 stores.
